Summer is a great time to visit this gorgeous corner of the Neapolitan Riviera, but knowing what to pack can be tricky. Temperatures often push 30°C in July and August, but it’s likely you’ll be doing a lot of walking through the region’s picturesque towns, so staying cool and comfortable is essential. The Amalfi Coast has reputation for being a chic resort; Italian women and men are effortlessly stylish. Here’s a few tips on what to pack to have you dressing like a local in no time…
For daytime, light sun dresses or skirts are ideal for Amalfi Coast holidays; they’re cool, classy and easy to pack. If you prefer trousers, go for white or light-coloured capris. In Italy, shorts and flip flops are left strictly for the beach, so smart, flat sandals are a good option. Lace-up Capri sandals were Jackie Kennedy’s footwear of choice when she visited the area.
If you really want to look the part, accessorise with sunglasses – the bigger the better. A scarf is also a handy accessory to pack; stylish, welcome on cool evenings and helpful if you need an emergency cover up – dressing modestly when visiting churches is strictly enforced in Italy.
Choose dresses that can be worn for the evenings. Swap your sandals for heels and just add jewellery to look at the part in local bars and restaurants. Don’t forget to pack a small evening bag, too.

Italian men are every bit as stylish as the women, and on the Amalfi Coast, it’s all about Riviera chic. Leave shorts for the beach, and pack a pair of long, light trousers. Smart jeans are suitable for the evenings, paired with a crisp cotton or linen shirt. Many restaurants and hotels will enforce a long trouser dress code, so don’t get caught out.
For footwear, loafers or a pair of deck shoes are ideal for daytime and evening, and don’t forget accessories – sunglasses are a must for gentlemen, too. You might also want to consider a small cross-body bag for your camera and essentials. While there’s no need to pack a proper dinner jacket, a smart plain jacket is helpful for cool evenings.
