Who says you have to be Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to marry in style? We chat with Karen Cooper, our Wedding Specialist, about what you can expect from a wedding in Italy – from castle venues to honeymooning on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.
What do Citalia Wedding Specialists do?
We create a bespoke wedding package just for you – from flights and hotels to planning the wedding reception and honeymoon. There’s a myth that getting married abroad is hard work, but in my experience almost nothing is insurmountable. We reassure the couple, sort out visas, validity, certificates – all the tricky admin stuff.
We know that time is precious, so our job is to take away any worries or stresses of planning a wedding abroad. We’ll handle any problems that might pop up quickly and smoothly, because we have years of experience when it comes to Italian weddings.
We also put you in touch with your local wedding planner. They’re specialists who have a real connection to the area they work in. They might have grown up there, lived there for years – or maybe even married a local themselves! This local knowledge means they can recommend things like an unusual Italian flower for the bouquet or a local wine for the toast. They’ll also know the very best photo spots.
Best of all, our wedding planners have access to – and can get great deals on! – everything from photographers to caterers. They’ll also act as translators at the ceremony, so you know what you’re getting into!
What’s different about booking a wedding with Citalia?
Unlike a lot of wedding specialists, we don’t insist on you turning your wedding into a long holiday. You don’t have to commit to 14 days abroad or anything like that. Your wedding will be completely bespoke – it’ll be however long you want it to be.
But we also love Italy, so we’ll always discuss whether the couple wants to add a honeymoon to the end. It doesn’t even have to be in the same place as your wedding ceremony – you could have your wedding in Sorrento with family and friends and then escape to the Amalfi Coast. Or you could marry in Venice or Verona and travel back to London on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.
What are your favourite things about Italian weddings?
They’re so friendly and personal. We’ve arranged limoncello carts in Sorrento, photo booths with a Vespa backdrop, vintage Fiat 500s as the wedding car, meals in tiny trattorias and on boats…
One of my favourite wedding destinations is Malcesine Castle on Lake Garda. It’s historic, it has lake views… And because it’s a castle, it’s great for big groups. In a place like that, there’s practically no limit to the number of guests you can invite. Italians love big weddings!
And finally – why is Italy perfect for a wedding?
There are loads of reasons why I think Italy is the perfect place for a wedding! It’s so accessible, the weather’s better, the amazing food, the friendly people… Cost is a big thing, too – weddings in Italy are generally cheaper than in the UK & Ireland. Also, you don’t have to book too far in advance. Your wedding doesn’t have to be years in the making – as soon as the legal stuff is sorted, you’re good to go!
